FDA Hand Sanitizer Warning

Last Updated on

The FDA is exercising significant caution with the importation of hand sanitizer due to many products containing methanol, which is toxic to humans. For this reason, importers of hand sanitizer should be prepared for at least nominal delays in release of their shipments, and potentially extensive delays awaiting FDA lab analysis.

As can be seen by FDA’s Import Alert 66-78, Mexican origin hand sanitizers are subject to automatic detention for lab analysis. Anecdotal trade reports these detentions are in requiring 60-90 days just for lab results, and typically result in destruction orders.
